When dealing with connecting vs collecting the dots there are a few main takeaways .

4 keys to building learners conceptual framework

  • Provide the context for learners and introduce the conceptual framework

  • Create a learning and engaging environment for the learner to start making connections

  • Model the learning process and incorporate new learning patterns that lead to problem solving

  • Mentor the learners and help guide them in the direction to expound on their conceptual framework

Experts

An expert is able to access the conceptual framework from many different perspectives. Due to their expertise and ability to connect those ideas , it makes them more adaptable , efficient and effective as a problem solver. As a learner experts convey the a mindset to see the bigger picture and outcome of learning. Understanding the concepts or the dots collected combined with the meaningful connections or the dots connected build on a new understanding of learning.

Novice

Unlike a expert , a novice faces many challenges. A novice has minimally developed conceptual framework. They experience many errors and roadblocks when it comes to understanding concepts. Some of the big dots or collected dots were white meaning limited understanding or missing concepts. Red big dots representing wrong or incorrect concepts. The smaller broken dots or the collected dots stood for missing or broken concepts. Overall with a novice there is ultimately something that is missing or not understood that effects their progress and creating the bigger picture in learning.

Overall

Connecting the dots involve a combination of different skills. Analyzing the conceptual framework is the key to connecting the dots. Also synthesizing and evaluating the collected dots can lead to deeper understanding of how a learner learns and how it effects their mindset. The main idea is to create specific leaner goals to help the learner understand key concepts.
